S'il n'est pas possible de citer avec exactitude la date de sortie du premier jeu Wasteland, on peut se référer aux publications de l'époque pour observer que le jeu était encore en finitions en mars 1988 et que certains magasines commentaient le jeu fraîchement sorti en mai 1988. Le premier jeu Fallout est considéré comme un successeur spirituel de Wasteland. Ce jeu fut développé par Interplay Entertainment et publié par Electronic Arts.
